'What, OpEx is not going down? What are you running on our cloud?' - your boss is on your toes now. Need answers? Here are some of the options you have. While all of them tell you what went wrong, some of them help you to fix it automatically. At least one of them supports more than one cloud provider - in case you are using multiple cloud platforms.

CloudWatch

CloudWatch is AWS's in built usage monitoring solution. It provides monitoring AWS usage, alarms, and even auto scaling. AWS provides a free tier to start using CloudWatch. Please check out their pricing for more details.

Cloudability is the first one to support monitoring multiple cloud platforms. They are TechStars graduates, venture funded, expanding startup based in Portland, Oregon, USA. They support multiple cloud platforms, provide programmatic APIs. They are hiring too! 

NewVem


NewVem is one of the hot cloud startups based in Tel Aviv, Israel. They support monitoring AWS usage, providing alerts, role based views (System Admin vs CIO) and recommendations for optimization. Most recently they added heat map visualization of your cloud usage. Please note that only AWS is supported as of now.

MetricsHub

MetricsHub is one

of the most recent entrant cloud monitoring solutions and also the one that got acquired very quickly by Microsoft. They provide monitoring and auto scaling. By using historic usage details, they are able to scale up or down in a predictive way. 

With cloud, you assume shared responsibility. You need to track your usage, just by moving to cloud is not going to magically save you money. However, you have help - Use wisely and Save!
