IIT Bombay based edu startup InOpen Technologies ties up with Tata Class Edge to change the way computer science is taught in schools

InOpen Technologies is an IIT Bombay based educational startup that focuses on developing high quality academic content through intense research. InOpen offers products and services to government and private schools. Its program Computer Masti addresses the need for active computer learning through a cutting edge curriculum. A collaborative product of IIT Bombay and InOpen Technologies, the program is available for CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE, SSC and other state education boards. The program was started to orient students to think analytically and approach technology with an open and creative mind.

To further this goal, InOpen Technologies and Tata ClassEdge, a leading provider of technology-enabled educational solution for schools, have partnered together to impart thinking skills through computer science education. Tata ClassEdge is the provider of innovative and comprehensive instructional solution that empowers teachers to teach better, with an effective blend of curriculum-mapped classroom activities and interactive multimedia. Tata ClassEdge’s proprietary instructional framework, Multiple Learning Experiences (M-LEx™) model, makes use of distinct types of activities that promote social and thinking skills in students, including critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, research-orientation and communication skills. More than 40,000 teachers across India have already adopted the Tata ClassEdge way of teaching.

Most of the computer science content available today is focused on making students memorize procedural steps or definitions of different software and hardware components. Computer Masti, InOpen’s flagship computer science program, on the other hand, is directed towards enabling students to develop algorithmic thinking — the foundational skill to effective programming.

Talking about the partnership, Mr. Rupesh Shah said, “We felt that the way computer science was taught in schools was fundamentally flawed. With Computer Masti, we are slowly changing the computer science landscape in schools across the country. The partnership with Tata ClassEdge, one of the most sought after digitally-enabled educational solution for schools, is a milestone for InOpen, and through this partnershipwe aim to impact 1200 schools in the next two to three years. I am glad to see a large conglomerate partnering with a start-up to bring positive changes in the field of computer science education.

Mr Nirav Khmabati, CEO of Tata ClassEdge said, “Both InOpen and Tata ClassEdge share the same educational philosophy—that teaching-learning ought to be active, participatory and skills-oriented. We believe in fostering partnerships that are built on synergy, aligned goals and a penchant for high quality solutions.

InOpen currently serves more than 600,000 students directly through its products, which includes its flagship product Computer Masti and its newly introduced science curriculum, Small Science. InOpen also works with the IT literacy solutions of various government and corporate organisations. The company had raised a strategic investment and Series A round of equity capital from Japanese education giant Benesse Holdings in November last year. InOpen had earlier raised a seed investment by VentureEast in August 2011.
