This mother of an 11-month-old baby helped save Panchkula from burning

The conviction of self-styled guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has thrown the picturesque Panchkula into turmoil. At least 38 people have died due to the violence, while over 300 have been injured. Amid all this chaos, however, a recent incident has shown that some sanity still prevails.

Meet Gauri Parashar Joshi, the Deputy Commissioner of Panchkula and the mother of an 11-month-old baby, who took over the streets to calm the angry protestors. In this entire process, she burnt herself, had bruises on her body, and returned with torn clothes as the angry mob charged at her with stones and lathis, says a report by The Economic Times. Although the situation was eventually brought under control, her display of bravery is winning hearts across the country.

A 2009 graduate, the young officer from Odisha cadre has been serving Panchkula for the last one year, says a report by ScoopWhoop. This brave act adds one more feather to the young mother's cap. Previously, when she was posted in a highly Naxal-affected area in Orissa, she helped local women fight poverty-induced tensions.

Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been allocated a single cell in Rohtak prison after being sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment and fined Rs 30 lakh. Eighteen years after he raped two of his female disciples, he has been sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment in each of the two cases of rape. Both the sentences will run consecutively, the sect chief's counsel SK Garg Narwana said after the special CBI judge pronounced the sentence in the District Jail in Sunaria, which was brought under extraordinary security following Friday's violence.
