Wednesday November 08, 2017 , 2 min Read

MC Mary Kom has won gold in the 48-kg category at the Asian Women’s Boxing Championships. This is her fifth gold medal at the Asian Women's Boxing Championships, which took place in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam this year.

The Olympic bronze medallist added this medal to her collection courtesy of a unanimous 5-0 verdict on Wednesday.

In yesterday's semifinals, Mary Kom defeated Tsubasa Komura of Japan in yet another unanimous 5-0 verdict. Talking to The Times of India before the finals, Mary Kom had said,

"I always knew that if I could remain fit, a gold medal was always within my grasp. I have managed to maintain my fitness over the course of this tournament and I am feeling very confident of a good show in the final as well."

Having been away from the boxing ring for a few years, this is her first international gold medal since 2014. This is also the first time in the past five years that she has competed in the 48-kg category, her weight category of choice.

In the past, the 34-year-old had notched up four golds and a silver in this tournament. According to News18, she said the following after her victory:

"I am really happy the way this championship has panned out. I would like to dedicate this victory to all those who have supported me even though the world had written me off. I would like to thank my coaching staff who worked hard with me over the last few months. A special word for the professional setup that BFI has put in place, ensuring the best facilities during the month-long camp and all the exposure trips for the team. Also, I am thankful to BFI president Mr Ajay Singh for showing faith in me."
