Tata Motors releases roadmap for the future: Smart City and Connected Car solutions

Friday February 09, 2018 , 3 min Read

At Auto Expo 2018, Tata Motors reaffirms its commitment to an electric future by showcasing the Smart Mobility concept.

In the 150th year of the Tata Group, Tata Motors unveiled its “Smart Mobility” and “Smart Cities” solutions at Auto Expo - The Motor Show 2018 in Delhi. The company showcased mobility solutions for intelligently connected cities designed to offer convenience, safety, security, and efficiency to customers.

The company has launched 26 smart city solutions where vehicles and the city will share and receive information through a smart network. It will have electric vehicles as a standard, with enormous amounts of data collected by a city’s corporation.

Guenter Butschek, MD and CEO, Tata Motors, said: “In line with our efforts to support the government's vision, we have developed 'Smart Mobility, Smart Cities' solutions and will give our customers a preview of Tata Motors' future mobility solution.”

The new concept sports car unveiled by Tata Motors

Tata Motors is displaying an extended range of six EV products enabling personal and mass mobility; these will have connected and smart connections. They will interact with cities through WiFi and connect to city services.

Tata Motors also showcased an Electric Bus and a Smart Bus Stop along with two electric passenger carriers – the Magic EV and the Iris EV. It also showcased the Tiago EV, the Tigor EV, and the Racemo EV.

Agreement with Microsoft

Earlier, Tata Motors and Microsoft India announced a strategic agreement to redefine connected and personalised driving experiences for Indian customers. Tata Motors will also leverage Microsoft’s connected vehicle technologies that bring together artificial intelligence (AI), advanced machine learning, and the Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities on the global hyper-scale Azure cloud, to traverse the digital and physical worlds and create a highly personalised, smart and safer driving experience across the digital life of a vehicle owner.

Using Microsoft technology will empower Tata Motors to provide connectivity features on mainstream, mass-market vehicles at affordable prices.

Tata Motors aims to continuously develop and launch new connected services and applications that make it easier for people to stay connected to work, entertainment and social networks, with greater safety and security as well as services that maximise better use of newly found in-car free time.

Platform for innovation

In addition, the automaker’s recently launched ring-fenced vertical, TAMO, will act as an open platform to foster innovation through a startup ecosystem and develop vehicles with on-the-go connectivity. In its first phase, the advanced offerings will incorporate technologies such as cloud computing, analytics, geo-spatial and mapping, and increased human-machine interface. This will create a new benchmark in the industry for connected vehicles. TAMO will provide a digital eco-system, which will be leveraged by Tata Motors to support mainstream business in the future.

“With the aim to develop innovative and technologically leading products that excite customers, we understand the need for a connected ecosystem that can integrate into the digital lives of customers. We are using Microsoft’s connected vehicle technologies on Azure intelligent cloud to bring the digital lives of our customers into the cars they drive,” Butschek said.

Now, that Tata Motors is in the game. Even Mahindra and Mahindra have come out and shown connected vehicle solutions and with them launching it, it just about signals why connected vehicles are going to be important in India.
