Thursday December 15, 2022 , 2 min Read

After a hiatus of three years owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, Formula Bharat, an engineering design competition, announced its return as a fully on-track event. The upcoming edition of Formula Bharat will be held at Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore from January 19 to January 24, 2023.

The previous three editions of the championship were held either completely online or in a hybrid format comprising virtual and on-track events.

The seventh season will see 53 teams participating from engineering colleges across India where each team will present self-designed formula-style vehicles.

What is Formula Bharat?

Formula Bharat is an Indian Formula Student-style engineering design competition wherein students from educational institutions compete with life-size formula-style vehicles in areas of engineering design, overall cost, marketability, and dynamic performance. The competition is based on the global student Formula series hosted in eleven countries every year.

The event’s objective is to encourage students to gain hands-on practical experience while applying engineering theories studied in the classroom. All participating teams are required to build their racing cars from scratch and seek sponsorship and donations to fund their projects.

The teams have to design and fabricate a prototype vehicle as per the competition's rules, which will be evaluated by a jury of experts from motorsports, automotive, and supplier industries over six days.

The 2023 edition

The upcoming edition of Formula Bharat has been divided into two sections: Class I and Class II for combustion as well as electric categories. In Class I, student teams don’t have to build a prototype vehicle and will rather be judged by industry experts based on their conceptual designs.

The results of Class I were announced in November this year, with Hermes Racing from the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Odisha, declared as the overall winner in the combustion category, and IITK Motorsports from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, taking home the honours in the electric category.

As for Class II, participants will have to present a physical prototype vehicle on-site at the Kari Motor Speedway in January 2023. This season, the competition site will be opened to visitors to view the track events, join guided tours, attend the awards ceremonies, and interact with the participating teams, partners, and organisers.

Visitors will have access to both online and offline passes. Offline passes can be purchased at the on-site registration booth. For online purchases, visit: www.formulabharat.com/visitors/
